Barrow joint-boss Dave Bayliss is fearful winger Simon Wiles could be a long-term absentee after he was injured in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat by Altrincham.Wiles, 25, was replaced after just four minutes and Bayliss revealed the initial diagnosis prior to the player's trip to hospital looked bleak.

"The medics there said it looked like a cruciate [ligament] which is a blow," Bayliss told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"It's another injury in a horrible season so far for injuries."

Bayliss added: "He's had tremendous knee problems in the past, but this is on his other knee so it's not connected.

"It's not just disappointing for us, it's disappointing for Wiles, he's a great lad and we just hope it's not as serious as is first thought."

Wiles, who joined the club after injuries ended his time at Dunfermline in Scotland, was part of the Barrow side that won the FA Trophy against Stevenage at Wembley last season.

Meanwhile an injury to striker Jason Walker could pose another headache for the management team ahead of Saturday's trip to Hayes & Yeading.

Walker's eight goals this season helped the Bluebirds into the top-half of the Blue Square Bet Premier

"He didn't want to come off. It's probably our fault we should have taken him off as his ankle's really swollen," Bayliss added.

"When you're chasing the game, injured or not, you don't take your leading striker off because he might get one or two chances."
